Your favourite superhero:
I love the daughter character in The Incredibles - Violet. Her superpower is that she can become invisible and also put a force field up to protect herself and others. I love her transformation from a shy girl who would use her invisibility power to hide, to someone who takes ownership of her power and uses it to help others.

Qualifications:
After working in the financial planning industry for more than 24 years, I have bought and sold a  number of businesses so my ‘life qualifications’ are through the roof. I actually bought my first business when I was 22!

I have had a huge amount of on-the-job training which has helped mould me into the leader and manager I am today. I have worked in the financial services industry for a long time, worked in and supported IT businesses, and helped other small businesses with everything from HR to putting effective systems in place.

I have a growth mindset, so am very open to learning, and have had a business coach for more than 15 years. I know I can always do things better so I tend to ‘hire my weakness’ and then learn from them. I ensure I hire qualified financial planners who are very highly skilled and have excellent credentials so I can deliver on the vision I have for the business.

Cassandra Kavanagh, CEO/‘Little Big Boss’

Years in financial services: 24 years

The role in a nutshell:
I own and run Rethink Financial Planning as well as Rethink Your Workspace, and provide the teams with what I hope is a safe, comfortable and fun workplace. I also work hard to make sure they all feel comfortable to come to me when they need anything, and that our work always aligns with our core value of putting people first.

I think of myself as the support backbone at Rethink. Part mentor, part team member, I’m a decision maker and keep us flowing in line with our overall goals and objectives. I am a people person and a big believer in checking in and consulting with the team - the people who do the work every day - to make sure our processes support them and provide the client with the best possible service.

Why you love working at Rethink Financial Planning:
I feel very grateful to have the opportunity to lead change in an industry I’m passionate about. Even though I’m CEO, I believe we’re all pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. I’m a leader who knows I don’t stand alone. I need my team and also know it’s invaluable to ask the right people the right questions to complete the puzzle. As a mum who has spent a long time putting puzzle pieces back in their boxes, I’d get very frustrated if there was a piece missing.

I love the vibe and energy in the space and for me the cafe just tops it off – it’s the icing on the cake. It’s a warm, unobtrusive and comforting space. People don’t feel intimidated – I’ve tried to create a space that makes people feel as comfortable as if they were in their own lounge room. Unfortunately a lot of people used to feel uncomfortable coming to financial planners so I wanted to change that. Plus I get to bring my puppy dog to work!

We deliver services with a people-first focus. We have so much to give and we love being able to make change in people’s lives.

Advice you wish everyone knew:
That your uniqueness is the most important gift that you have. Own it, wear it with pride, and don’t ever compromise on it.

Best career moment:
Creating and moving into this space.

What you are passionate about:
Making a change for myself and others.

One of your biggest inspirations:
I’m inspired by people who want to leave the world in a better place than they’ve found it, and who give more than they’ve taken. People who are intentionally here to make the world a better place. It doesn’t matter the size of the stage they are on, it’s the impact that matters.
