Laura Bastian, Paraplanner/Client Services Manager
Years in financial services: 7 years
The role in a nutshell:
I assist with research, the implementation of plans, liaise with Centrelink on behalf of clients, assist with aged care strategy and implementation, and support our clients in general. I find that the Aged Care and Centrelink-specific aspects of my role are quite different from most traditional financial services roles. We’re able to give clients some peace of mind that a professional is handling things for them and they don’t have to worry about the burden of what the best thing to do financially in an otherwise stressful time. We let clients know that they can leave the financial side of things with us, and they can focus on the emotional stuff around either entering care themselves, or dealing with the reality of a loved on entering care.
Why you love working at Rethink Financial Planning:
A lot is to do with the team - everyone is here for the right reasons. We all want to support our clients, and we have the same moral compass around how we do this. Our office is a very different space to other offices too (having an in house café is a real bonus!).
Advice you wish everyone knew:
That you don’t necessarily have to sell your house to pay for aged care, there are financial planners that can help you navigate through the transition to aged care so that you can make an informed decision.
Best career moment:
I love my job, but I was particularly touched when we helped an elderly client transition to aged care and were able to correct a complex Centrelink error regarding their aged care fees - which resulted in a substantial refund to the client.
